Earlier this week Fabian Schar announced he was bowing out of representing Switzerland and now his defensive Newcastle United teammate has followed suit.
Kieran Trippier has posted a statement on social media this morning that, while not actually stating outright that he's retiring from international football, certainly reads that way.
The Newcastle right-back turns 34 next month and has racked up 54 international caps for England over the years and was heavily involved as England reached the European Championship final in 2024 and 2021.
Trippier was loved by Gareth Southgate and as long as he was remotely fit it was pretty much a given that he'd be called up. In fact, Southgate loved him so much that he'd often play him out of position just so he was in the team.
A new era is dawning at England after Gareth Southgate's resignation and Trippier has seen it as the right time to step aside, posting a lengthy message on Instagram.
"I want to say a big thank you to Gareth and all the staff that have worked with the England squad for the trust they have placed in me throughout the years.
"Thank you to all my team mates - we have had some very special moments reaching 2 Euro finals, and a World Cup semi final and I am sure in the future this group of players will win a major tournament.
"I want to wish Lee, the coaching staff and the team all the best for the future .
"And finally a big thank you to all the England fans for your incredible support travelling all over the world to support us and keeping us going in the difficult moments 🏴
"Trips"
It can only be good news for Newcastle (if he stays) as there have been many times that Trippier has represented England when it seemed like the better option would have been for him to rest.
Now Tripps can kick on at St James' Park knowing that when the international break comes around, he gets a bit of time for some rest and relaxation.
There are still some rumours that Trippier could leave the club before the transfer window closes, but with less than 36 hours until the window shuts, we think it's highly unlikely now.
