Michael Carrick praises 'top manager' Eddie Howe ahead of Newcastle United's meeting with Manchester United
Boyhood Newcastle United fan Michael Carrick must put his allegiances aside tomorrow as he brings his Manchester United side to St James' Park.
The former Wallsend Boys Club star grew up supporting Newcastle but never got the chance to play for his local team, instead being picked up by West Ham before moving on to play for Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
After a successful spell managing Middlesbrough, Man United turned to their former captain to steady the ship after they parted ways with Ruben Amorim, and he's doing such a good job that he's being heavily backed to take the role on a permanent basis at the end of the season.
Hopefully, Newcastle can put a big dent in his record tomorrow night, and we're sure that no matter which way the result goes, Carrick will have mixed feelings.
Michael Carrick says he has 'huge respect' for Eddie Howe
Speaking to the media today, Carrick has spoken about his admiration for Eddie Howe and the job he has done at Newcastle.
“Huge respect for Eddie and his staff.
“I know some of them particularly well. From being there, I keep a close eye on. The feeling he has created is incredible.
“He is a top manager, top coach, and he will continue having success, I am sure.”
Michael Carrick as a future Newcastle boss, anyone?
We obviously aren't expecting any favours from him or his Manchester United side tomorrow night, but if he was really that big of a fan, he'd put Casemiro in goal and Harry Maguire up front on his own or something.
Michael Carrick never got to play for Newcastle, but he's making a good case to be a potential future manager based on what he's done at Manchester United this season.
That's not us saying we want him to replace Eddie Howe, but when the time comes, if Carrick has managed to maintain this level, we could do a lot worse.
