Everything seemed to be lining up nicely for Newcastle United in their pursuit of James Trafford after Burnley confirmed the signing of Max Weiß on Thursday.

With a new young goalkeeper at the club it seemed to leave the door wide open for James Trafford to finally sign for the Magpies a year after a move broke down.

Indeed, shortly after Burnley's announcement, Fabrizio Romano posted on X that Newcastle would be accelerating their efforts to bring the England keeper to the Toon.

Romano then followed that up a couple of hours later suggesting that Trafford and Newcastle had agreed terms and all that remained was to agree a fee with Burnley.

Burnley haven't signed Max Weiß as a replacement for James Trafford

However, a report from TBR Football has cast a shadow of doubt over the move, albeit a pretty small one.

Burnley have claimed that Max Weiß has come in as a No. 2 and could even be loaned out next season, meaning they haven't actually brought in a replacement for James Trafford.

This could delay things for Newcastle, although, Burnley will have been well aware of the high likelihood that they'd lose Trafford this summer, so while Weiß may not be the answer, they are likely to have a plan in place for when Trafford leaves.

Newcastle should be prepared to walk away if Burnley won't compromise

Newcastle do have other options if the deal for Trafford falls apart, but other sources do seem pretty confident that Newcastle and Burnley will work things out for Trafford.

It's probably worth keeping an eye on things over the next week, but if we're getting towards Friday and there's still no movement, it might be time to start looking elsewhere.

We don't want to be dragged into any long-running transfer sagas again this year, especially when there are plenty of goalkeepers out there that we have in our crosshairs who could prove to be just as good as Trafford.
