Newcastle United looking to France to solve goalkeeper problem after another Nick Pope howler on Saturday
Nick Pope dropped another clanger on Saturday, allowing Everton striker Beto to score one of the easiest goals of his career.
It's the latest in a series of errors made by the Newcastle United No 1 this season, and patience is starting to run out with the former England international amongst the fanbase.
Mistakes happen in football, and when you're a goalkeeper, those mistakes get amplified as they so often lead to goals for the opposition, but it's not just about the errors Pope has made this season.
Newcastle haven't kept a clean sheet since the 3-0 win over PSV in January, and that's been a mix of Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale in goal, so it's unfair to point all the blame towards Pope. Obviously, the defence has to take a fair bit of responsibility for that too.
Newcastle are looking at 21-year-old Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser
Newcastle have been looking for their next goalkeeper for a while, though, and James Trafford looked to be the ideal candidate, but that move has fallen apart twice.
While Trafford may be available this summer after his dream return to Manchester City hasn't worked out, it looks like Newcastle aren't being daft enough to pin all their hopes on him again and have other targets in mind.
A report from TEAMtalk suggests Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur have their eyes on 21-year-old Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser after a stunning season with the Ligue 1 side.
At this point, age isn't our top priority
Risser has kept nine clean sheets this season and has conceded just 21 goals in 24 Ligue 1 games for the French title chasers.
It definitely looks like Newcastle is after bringing in a young goalkeeper to take the position long term, having looked at Trafford and now Risser.
In all honesty, at this point, age doesn't matter; we just want a goalkeeper who can keep the ball out of the net and isn't afraid to use his feet. And if they could also not be an absolute heed the ball and come charging out of their box at stupid times, that would be great too.
