Eddie Howe spoke to the press on Friday morning ahead of Saturday's game at Selhurst Park where Newcastle United will take on Crystal Palace.
One topic that was discussed as the future of one of Newcastle's more reliable players in the Eddie Howe era, Fabian Schar.
The 32-year-old recently spoke of his desire to remain at Newcastle with his contract set to expire in the summer.
Schar was reinstated to the side by Eddie Howe after Steve Bruce left him to rot and the former Switzerland international has repaid Howe's faith with consistent performances and an uncanny ability to shake off injuries.
When asked about Schar's future on Friday in the press conference, Eddie Howe was quick to heap praise on the centre-back and confirmed his desire to keep him at the club beyond this season.
“With Fabian, just speaking from my behalf, he’s been incredible for me, I have to say he has been absolutely sensational with some of the performances he’s delivered. He’s an integral part of what we’re doing.
“His use of the ball is well known, his technical qualities and defensively he’s been very strong for us. Yes, he’s an important player and we’d love to keep him.”
With neither party ready to call it a day just yet this should be an easy enough deal to get done.
Newcastle will continue their search for a long-term replacement for Schar in the meantime after failing to land Marc Guehi in the summer.
The Magpies will be hoping to show Guehi what he's missing out on today in a 3pm kick-off daahn saahf.
