Premier League side 'drop interest' in Sandro Tonali after January transfer speculation caused waves
Newcastle United fans were given whiplash on deadline day in January when a story broke that Arsenal were preparing a deadline day swoop for Sandro Tonali.
No sooner had we learned about their intentions than the story was rubbished from both sides, and while we were still coming to terms with that, another story was released suggesting that Sandro Tonali's agent had been shopping the Italian out to clubs to gauge interest in a summer move.
Once again, those rumours were denied, but with every denial, it felt like there was a door left open for the potential for Tonali to be on the lookout for a summer switch.
This never felt like it came from the player himself, who insists he's settled on Tyneside, but his agent seems to be getting desperate for a big payday.
Arsenal are looking at other options after dropping interest in Sandro Tonali
It now looks as though Arsenal are no longer at the table, if indeed they ever truly were. This is according to a report in The Chronicle.
They have been led to believe that Tonali wasn't discussed as an option when the Gunners met to talk about their summer transfer plans, which takes one big name off the list at least.
There are bound to be plenty of links to Italian clubs, most likely Juventus, but it has long been established that there's very little chance an Italian side could afford to do a deal for the midfield maestro.
Manchester United still have Sandro Tonali on their shortlist to replace Casemiro
There's still interest from elsewhere in the Premier League, particularly with Manchester United looking at options to replace Casemiro when he departs at the end of the season.
Man United are thought to have Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes on their shortlist, but we can't see Newcastle being too willing to do a deal on either of those players with such a close rival.
Of course, we said that about Alexander Isak and Liverpool, and while Newcastle weren't willing, they ultimately had to cave in and make the deal, so we can never say never.
