It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to see that things at Newcastle United aren't exactly hunky-dory right now.

The fanbase is teetering on a meltdown after two poor performances in a row, just holding back from going over that cliff due to picking up four points from two games.

However, there's still a lot to be desired when it comes to Newcastle's transfer business, both incoming and outgoing, this summer and that's probably a bigger concern than the lacklustre performances.

Eddie Howe and the players have plenty of time to turn that around, to get their intensity back and work on the issues, but when it comes to the transfer market, time is running out fast. The transfer deadline is Friday at 11pm and nothing seems to be moving.

Alan Shearer noticed the poor body language of some of Newcastle's players

The Marc Guehi deal is been stalled for weeks and the only other player we appear to be linked with is another chuffing goalkeeper to add to our collection. It's frankly baffling, and it's something that Alan Shearer has noticed, too.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer has remarked that things seem off at the club right now.

“I hope I’m wrong, but I just get the feeling as if something doesn’t look right, you know? I don’t get the feeling that it’s all perfect at the football club.

“Last week, there was a lack of energy, there was lack of a spark, even when it was eleven versus eleven but it was a great result against Southampton.

"But even eleven versus eleven they (Newcastle United) were second best. So I was thinking, they have had a week to work on things, but then apart from the first 10 minutes in the first half [against Bournemouth], I thought they were pretty awful.

“I didn’t like what I was seeing.“The body language was really poor from a lot of the players. Then Eddie Howe made changes and for 10 or 15 minutes in the second half, they were the better team, they got the goal. But I expect a lot more from them. Eddie is always about the energy, the press and everything, I didn’t see any of that."

Shearer believes Newcastle must make a statement signing

Shearer's concerns go beyond just what he's seen on the pitch, though, with the former Toon striker pointing the finger at Darren Eales and Paul Mitchell.

“Newcastle need to bring Marc Guehi in. They need to make a statement signing.

“It would be really embarrassing for those two (CEO Darren Eales and Director of Football Paul Mitchell) in particular who are now running the football club.

“For them to go into September without bringing a big hit, or a big statement signing in, I think would look really, really poor on those two.

“They have made several bids for Guehi and they just need to get it over the line. They cannot go into September without bringing a big signing in because I think it would reflect really bad on those two."

Fans were already gutted at losing Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi but were assured they'd left the club in safe hands, but since they left, nothing good has happened, so right now it's a bitter pill to swallow.
