When it comes to choosing the best Newcastle United goal you've ever seen, you could spend ages accessing your mental archives to think of that one that just tops the rest.

Alan Shearer was certainly partial to a screamer or two, Laurent Robert hit two absolute belters in one game at St James' Park against Spurs - both of those live on as the best goals I've ever seen live - but when Alan Shearer answered this very question on The Rest Is Football podcast, he had a different answer.

You'd perhaps expect that Shearer would draw on his own catalogue of goals to choose one. Perhaps that goal against Chelsea where he turned Marcel Desailly inside out and fired a rocket into the top corner, or the volley against Everton, or even the side-foot volley over the head of Peter Schmeichel against Aston Villa?

Nope. None of the above. Interestingly, Shearer wasn't even sure who actually scored his pick, but he remembers the goal well.

Papiss Cisse with another blinding strike

It was, of course, the sliced half volley from the outside the area that swerved into the top far corner of the Chelsea net at Stamford Bridge. The second top-class goal from Cisse in the game.

“Can you remember that goal at Stamford Bridge on that half volley, the slicer?

“Was it Cisse? The half-volley from the corner, how on earth he got that.

“I think that got goal of the month or goal of the season – it was an unbelievable goal.”

Have you seen a better two goals in a game from a striker?

In the first half, Cisse had already scored a goal-of-the-month contender when he teed up the ball with his right foot and volleyed it from the edge of the area with his left.

However, late in the second half, the Senegalese striker put the icing on the cake with the outrageous outside-of-the-foot effort over the head of Petr Cech.

For sheer audacity, it has to be up there as one of Newcastle United's greatest goals.
