Newcastle United have one foot in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley after a 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates.
It was always going to be a tricky tie for Newcastle, especially having to come to the Emirates where they had previously only won once, but Eddie Howe once again showed Mikel Arteta how it's done.
The Spaniard was absolutely livid by the end of the game and if we'd had a quid for every time he looked at his watch whenever Newcastle had a goal-kick or a free-kick in our own area, we're sure that PSR would no longer be a concern.
Eddie Howe set up his side to attack until they had a comfortable lead and then changed personnel and set up to park the bus for the remainder of the game and both approaches were executed superbly by a top-quality Newcastle United side that didn't even have Bruno Guimaraes. That's right, Newcastle won without Bruno Guimaraes. Something that is rarer than hen's teeth.
Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer was clearly enjoying himself tonight, celebrating the goals as they went in via his X account, but at full-time, Shearer found the caps lock to emphasise one word that perfectly summed up the evening.
"An OUTSTANDING first leg semi final performance from every single player from start to finish. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🖤🤍 #ARSNEW"
While there were a couple of players not playing their best for Newcastle tonight, the effort of the team papered over those cracks, and even the effort of those having an off night can't be questioned either.
Newcastle will have Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes back for the second leg, and will hopefully still be on this tremendous winning streak and full of confidence.
The obvious play in the second leg would be to avoid defeat, but Arsenal hate coming to St James' Park lately, so we should make them suffer. Attack from the off and bury them while we sing our way to Wembley.
I don't know about you, but I'm really going to struggle to get to sleep tonight. HOWAY THE LADS!!! What a night!
