Newcastle United at one point looked to be the frontrunners for RC Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov but things now seem to have swung away from Newcastle and to a league rival.

Tottenham Hotspur were also said to be keen on the 20-year-old Uzbekistan international, but it now appears that neither will be boasting Khusanov's name on their squad list after this month.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has posted on X today that Manchester City are locked in talks over a move for the the promising youngster.

City entered the race later than Newcastle and Spurs but seem to have elbowed their way to the front of the queue.

Fabrizio Romano says Abdukodir Khusanov to Manchester City is on

Romano revealed the other day that City have marked Khusanov as a priority target and going by today's update, they are certainly treating him as such with Romano saying the deal is on.

"🔵🇺🇿 Contacts continue between Man City and RC Lens for Abdukodir Khusanov, deal on.

"He’s on top of Man City list, as exclusively revealed last week."

Is Abdukodir Khusanov about to make a huge mistake?

So it looks like Abdukodir Khusanov will be the latest promising young talent swallowed up by Manchester City, never to be seen or heard from again, unless Khusanov or Jorge Mendez look at their history and realise that he's very likely to just fester and disappear.

He'd be much better served heading to Newcastle or even Tottenham, but when you're as big as Manchester City, you can attract anyone.

Newcastle still have other alternatives in mind, so it's by no means the end of the world, but we were starting to get quite excited by Khusanov.
