In the eyes of some, Eddie Howe's Newcastle United may be underperforming.
The Magpies boss has come under fire over the previous two performances in the Premier League, most recently in the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Newcastle failed to register a shot on target in the draw, relying on an coincidental Marc Guehi own goal from an impressive free kick routine.
Concerns have been raised regarding Howe and his tactics with the issue of plan b's and substitutions a key talking point. Howe's side currently sit 11th in the league table and face a tough challenge against Liverpool at St James' Park on Wednesday.
With those concerns, Newcastle hierarchy have now set the expectation for this season with clear boundaries set.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle bosses want a return to European football. The Magpies are currently four places off the 7th place they'd need to be in, even that would only be for a place in the Europa Conference League.
It looks like the task will be more difficult this season with a number of clubs looking like they could finish in those European spots.
Newcastle may have suffered from their own success after reaching the Champions League following a fantastic 2022/23 season. They had some thrilling moments but ultimately failed to reach the next round.
The Magpies' 7th place finish last season would've been enough for European football but missed out on qualification due to Manchester United's FA Cup win.
Bosses are also keen for Newcastle to make deep runs into the domestic competitions this season. The Magpies are currently in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and will enter the third round of the FA Cup in January.
Recent reports suggest that the January transfer window could be a busy one.
The Magpies are eyeing a move for Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov but face competition from Tottenham Hotspur and PSG.
Newcastle are reportedly willing to listen to offers for Kieran Trippier, the first signing of the new regime.
Miguel Almiron is also someone Newcastle will allow to leave in January. The 30-year-old has fallen out of the first team picture this season and is eager for more minutes. He has interest from the Saudi Pro League.
Jamaal Lascelles has attracted interest from Wolves who are keen to improve their leaky defence.
Callum Wilson could also leave in January with his contract winding down. The 32-year-old has interest from four top flight clubs including Fulham and Crystal Palace.
