Two Newcastle United players announced their decision to retire from international football last month but one may not be allowed to kick their feet up just yet.

Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar are a couple of years past that 30 mark where it starts getting harder and harder to recover after a game, so both defenders took the decision to cut down on their game time by announcing their decision to retire from England and Switzerland duty respectively.

While Trippier's decision seems very final with the right-back turning 34 later this month, Switzerland manager Murat Yakin isn't so keen to accept Schar's decision just yet.

Switzerland lost both of their Nations League games during this international break against Denmark and Spain and now Yakin is wishing he had his ever-dependable centre-back to call upon to shore up his defence.

Miss you already: Switzerland want Fabian Schar to return to international duty

Murat Yakin is prepared to fly to England to speak with Fabian Schar

In fact, Swiss outlet NZZ (via Sport Witness) claims that Yakin is prepared to fly to England to speak to Schar in a desperate bid to change his mind and return to international duty.

Considering back in March it looked like Schar was going to be forced to take a back seat for Switzerland, The Toonminator (I'm going to keep saying it until it catches on) ended up playing a very prominent role for Switzerland at Euro 2024.

Now, after two games without him in the back line, Yakin is realising how important Schar was to the side.

No offence to Switzerland but ... you've had your time, keep off Wor Fab

We hope that Yakin fails to convince Schar to return so that he can keep himself in tip-top shape for Newcastle's season ahead.

With Newcastle failing to add another right-sided centre-back to the roster this summer, we're going to need Schar fit and firing on all cylinders and adding meaningless Nations League games to his workload isn't going to help that cause.

Fabian Schar has just finished serving his three-game suspension for his ridiculous red card against Southampton and will likely be back in the starting lineup for Sunday's meeting with Wolves.
