A lot of football players choose to go into management once their playing career comes to an end, often with very mixed results.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe was thrust into management early with Bournemouth when he was still a player, and is likely one of the best people to ask about future managers.

You usually expect top players to make good managers, but Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney have certainly bucked that trend lately.

So of Newcastle United's current crop of players, who has what it takes to step into management?

We were expecting Eddie Howe to immediately name Kieran Trippier

Our gut feeling would be that Kieran Trippier would be the perfect candidate, but Tripps wasn't mentioned when Eddie Howe was asked that question as part of a Q&A with Sky Sports, with the Toon gaffer throwing out three very unexpected names.

"I think we've got a few so I'll go through a couple. I think Joelinton's definitely one. He's got a very good tactical brain, he understands the game.

"Sean Longstaff understands the game to a really high level, I think those two immediately strike me.

"Dan Burn's got an unbelievable presence and a good knowledge of the game and a great attitude, so he'd be a really hard worker. He'd be someone I can see doing it."

Sean Longstaff as a manager - who saw that answer coming?

It has been a big week for Dan Burn, and England call-up and now the gaffer is tipping him for management.

We're not going to lie, Joelinton and Sean Longstaff were surprise shouts for us, neither really struck us as the management type, but I guess we're not the ones who see them at work every day.

Still ... Just cannot imagine Sean Longstaff as a manager.
