Newcastle United have struggled to be competitive in the transfer window over the last 12 months.
The Magpies have failed to make a first team signing since summer 2023 where they invested in the likes of Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes.
Since then, Newcastle have failed to make any marquee signings opting for more youth recruitment. Although promising, the signings of Will Osula and Odysseas Vlachodimos aren't ones that will set the world alight. So really Newcastle have been stagnant for over a year now.
Not adding to your squad feels like a cardinal sin in the Premier League. If you don't improve your squad, you'll find yourself falling down the table which is exactly what seems to be happening to Newcastle who are 10th in the table.
It's time to look at what options Toon boss Eddie Howe has available to him as he looks to improve the squad.
In an article for The Northern Echo, Scott Wilson weighed up the options The Magpies have if they want to beat PSR and add more quality to the squad.
He considers the 'deadwood' first, those longstanding players who have been prominent since the days of Mike Ashley, the likes of Miguel Almiron, Jacob Murphy. Even some of those who have joined since the takeover who aren't getting enough of a runout. Matt Targett or Harvey Barnes for example.
While selling those players will get Newcastle some money, it surely isn't enough to compete with the other teams in a similar position in the table.
The Magpies nearly landed Marc Guehi in the summer but several bids were rejected. It remains to be seen if Newcastle were pushing the limits of their spending powers though.
In his article, Wilson rules out the sale of Alexander Isak because of the lack of depth the Magpies have up front. He suggests that Newcastle would have to spend the fee made from the sale on a replacement.
An option for Newcastle is to sell Bruno Guimaraes who has had longstanding interest from Ligue 1 giants PSG. The Brazilian's £100million release clause expired in summer but could still exit for a similar fee.
Star man Anthony Gordon is another player, albeit unlikely who could leave in January. The England International recently signed a new contract at the club but could be swayed to leave if the price is right. Premier League high flyers Liverpool were reportedly in talks with The Magpies over a move for Gordon this summer which ultimately led to nothing.
It is surely an interesting prospect for Gordon who is a boyhood Liverpool fan.
Club CEO Darren Eales once said that Newcastle would need to sell before they buy again, it's looking like that could be the case for the next few windows.
