If ever there was a former Newcastle United player we expected to take over the duties in the St James' Park dugout it was Alan Shearer.

The Geordie record breaking striker is a God amongst men on Tyneside and is Newcastle through and through. As well as being one of the best strikers England has ever produced, he just seemed to get the game and seemed to be the perfect fit to be Newcastle manager one day.

While we did get that for a brief eight-game spell when he was brought in to try and save his beloved club from relegation 15 years ago, the fact that he was in charge when his beloved club were relegated, combined with having to work for Mike Ashley who made a load of promises to Shearer before breaking them all, it's little surprise he's not returned to the dugout since.

Shearer's management career never progressed beyond those eight games at Newcastle with the Toon legend returning to TV work.

Would Alan Shearer return to management?

Now he's been out of the game for 15 years, Shearer was asked on the latest The Rest Is Football Q&A if he would be tempted to go back into management, and the answer was quite emphatic.

“No, it’s been too long. I’m very happy sat with you two idiots [Gary Linkeker and Micah Richards] anyway! So why would I want to go back into that?”

After the crap he went through with Mike Ashley promising him the job full-time and then giving it to Chris Hughton, it's no real surprise that his view of management has been tainted.

Alan Shearer is right where he should be

We do think he's been out of the game for too long to step back in now, but it would have been cool to see Big Al in the dugout given a proper shot at the job and actually being backed by the board.

However, we're more than happy to have him doing podcasts and taking the piss out of Sunderland and Manchester United on a weekly basis.

Also seeing him rip it out of Gary Lineker and Micah Richards never gets old either. He's right where he should be.
