We've heard it daily for the last three weeks but once again reports suggest that Newcastle United's move for Marc Guehi could see a big development today.

I long for the day when I can write about Marc Guehi being a Newcastle player, or the day that I don't have to mention his name again unless he does something in a game against Newcastle.

The constant speculation and updates with no actual outcome are getting tiresome, but it's literally all that's going on right now so here we are.

Today could well be the day according to Mark Douglas at iNews.

iNews says the move has 'jolted significantly closer'

Douglas has suggested that now Crystal Palace have got their Carabao Cup tie out of the way then the deal could take a step forward.

"Guehi’s move has jolted significantly closer in the last 24 hours, with fresh dialogue edging the clubs towards an agreement – and that could come as early as Wednesday after Crystal Palace’s Carabao Cup game against Norwich City."

The transfer deadline is Friday at 11pm which means if Palace are going to let Guehi go, they have no more games to use him in before the end of the window. They have maximised his usefulness this season before allowing him to leave.

We may feel like we're overpaying for Guehi now but he has the potential to be seen as a bargain in the future

As much as Newcastle are over-paying for Guehi at £70 million I don't think anyone can argue the fact that we'd be getting a top-quality player and he could make a big difference to the side, especially as we're already playing defenders out of position because of a lack of options.

Will he be a game-changer? That remains to be seen. With a bit of luck, in a couple of months we'll be looking at him and saying we got a bargain.

That is, of course, if the deal ever gets over the line.
