Football matches can often be won and lost in single moments and Newcastle United can pinpoint the exact moment they lost the game against Chelsea on Sunday.

After picking up another defeat, Newcastle now find themselves in the bottom half of the Premier League table. Strange territory for the Magpies in the last couple of years.

It's something that could have easily been avoided had striker, Alexander Isak not been so greedy.

After doing so much right, staying onside and leaving Wesley Fofana in his wake before rounding Robert Sanchez, Isak ignored the totally unmarked Joelinton in the middle of the area with no 'keeper to beat, and also ignored the open goal (albeit at a tight angle) and instead tried to to do more fancy footwork before ultimately losing the ball.

Luke Edwards is starting to question Alexander Isak's focus this season

It was a moment that saw Eddie Howe rage, shouting "What are you doing?" from the sidelines. We can only imagine that Nice Guy Eddie was absent in the dressing room at full-time.

Journalist Luke Edwards notice what Isak did, or indeed, didn't do after the incident, posting on X about how he didn't even apologise for his selfish actions.

"This was a player thinking only of himself, not the team. He didn't even apologise to teammates after doing it either."

You could argue that Newcastle would have won if they'd grabbed a second goal

That moment could have rescued a point for Newcastle which would have been enough to keep them in the top half of the Premier League table, just.

Newcastle were in the ascendancy at that point, too, so you could even make the argument that a second goal could have spurred Newcastle on to win. But now we'll never know.

With Chelsea heading to St James' Park on Wednesday, albeit likely a very different side, Eddie Howe needs to make sure that his lads put all of this behind them while also setting them up to take revenge.

Going out of the cup could just be the straw that breaks the camel's back as the fanbase is teetering on the edge of a meltdown now.
