It certainly seems as though Newcastle United are waiting until July to start their transfer business, ensuring they have a full picture of what they can spend after the PSR reporting period ticks over to a fresh year.
From July 1st it will be a new reporting period for PSR, meaning that the £70 million loss from three years ago will drop off the calculations, leaving Newcastle with considerably more headroom which which to make some decent purchases.
Why is the new reporting period in the middle of a transfer window? Only the idiots who put this whole thing in place can answer that.
However, with the new month getting ever nearer, Newcastle have been expected to ramp up their activity, and it seems that they are doing just that.
Fabrizio Romano has issued an update via X this morning suggesting that talks are now underway between Burnley and Newcastle for goalkeeper James Trafford.
"🚨⚪️⚫️ Negotiations between Newcastle and Burnley for James Trafford are underway.
"Club to club talks continue as the deal can happen from July, so expected to accelerate from next week."
Newcastle have been patient when it comes to James Trafford after missing out on the young England stopper last summer. Trafford was keen on the move too and both parties have seemingly been waiting for this summer to roll around to get the deal done.
However, Burnley will return to the Premier League next season and that was thanks in large part to James Trafford having an outstanding season between the sticks. Burnley are now demanding more than the £30 million it was once mooted would be enough to seal the deal.
Talks will likely rumble on over the next week, but as we said with the PSR reporting deadline, and was hinted at by Romano, we'll be looking at July before anything is confirmed.
