With a Carabao Cup final at Wembley looming large on the horizon, the vibes around Newcastle United should be pretty fun right now, but they are anything but.

Liverpool are Newcastle's opponents at Wembley in just under a fortnight's time with the Reds having just beaten the Magpies in the Premier League very comfortably, not even a week ago.

On top of that, Newcastle were chucked out of the FA Cup on Sunday by Brighton in a game that went to extra time after a Fabian Schar winner was chalked off for the tightest of offsides.

To add insult to injury, Anthony Gordon got himself sent off in that game and will now miss the final through suspension.

The NUFC hashtag on X is a mess this morning

This morning it has been confirmed by the club that Lewis Hall will now miss the rest of the season and there are also very strong rumours that Sven Botman will not recover from his knee injury in time to be ready for Wembley either.

As you can imagine, the fanbase is having a hard time today, but on the plus side, gallows humour is sweeping the NUFC hashtag. I mean, you have to laugh or you'll cry.

@Im_RobM is mourning the loss of Lloyd Kelly, while X user @NUFCLC said this beauty:

FYI fans keep your eye on your phone, the club are ringing as “Unknown Caller”. Just had my ticket upgraded from Block 135 to a place on the bench. #NUFC

Now is not the time to throw in the towel

Not everybody is in the mood for jokes, however, we have people trying to rally the troops, those highlighting what Tino Livramento is capable of, and those who have opted for a barrage of swear words to make their feelings clear.

I'm currently touring all of the above in my brain. I don't know how to feel about it. There is a perverse humour in our rotten luck, but are we really ready to throw in the towel 13 days before the actual fixture?

Monday night against West Ham is going to be huge. An enormous test of character for the players, the manager and the fans. We're confident that by the time the Wembley trip comes around the mourning period will be over and the Toon Army will be swept up in the occasion and will get behind their team.

For now, get those frustrations vented in whatever way feels natural, but remember, we're not finished yet!
