Earlier in the transfer window Bayern Munich beat a host of Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United, to the signing of Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise.
It's a move that Newcastle could now be looking to take advantage of in another way according to reports.
The Mirror (Sunday [14/07, page 78]) (h/t The Boot Room) is claiming that Newcastle and Arsenal are weighing up a move for 29-year-old Germany winger Serge Gnabry.
Gnabry is of course a former Gunner having plied his trade with Arsenal from 2012-2016 before heading back to Germany.
Newcastle are still searching for the ideal player to take over from Miguel Almiron on the right-hand side, and Gnabry certainly has the chops, having won plenty of silverware in his career, including the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2020.
However, injuries have held Gnabry back recently and the 29-year-old only managed 20 appearances last season, which is likely why Newcastle will feel, now that Bayern have brought in Olise, that they could get a deal done. It's worth noting, though, that in those 20 appearances, Gnabry did manage five goals and two assists.
At 29, though, Gnabry certainly isn't a long-term replacement for Miggy like someone like Anthony Elanga would be at just 22 years old.
With 22 goals in 45 caps for Germany, Newcastle would be getting a winger who knows where the back of the net is, it's really just a case of whether Newcastle feel his age and injury record can be small enough concerns that they would be willing to risk the £40million asking price.
We are 50/50 on this one. There's definitely a quality player in Gnabry, but we'd be getting him a couple of years past his peak and would likely have to replace him in a year or two anyway. At the same time though, in those couple of years, he could end up being outstanding and taking us to the next level.
If Newcastle can negotiate on the price, then he's definitely an option. As much as we'd prefer bringing in someone younger, having someone like Serge Gnabry at the club would be another statement of intent.
