Newcastle United were miles off their best last night as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to West Ham but it was also miles better than some performances this season.

When the red mist dissipates, it's easier to see the positives in last night's performance, and there were a few ... very few, but a few nonetheless.

However, with that clarity also comes the ability to see the negatives more clearly too and that's what The Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards decided to focus on when ranting on social media this morning.

If we're being honest here, nothing he said is wrong either as he took aim at Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle's substitutions didn't help matters at all

Edwards claimed last night that Bruno, Alexander Isak and Gordon all went missing in last night's game and he's absolutely spot on. Gordon was anonymous, Isak left his shooting boots in Sweden and I can't remember a single thing Bruno did.

However, the substitutes that Howe brought on to change things up were arguably even worse. Harvey Barnes kept getting to the byline early on in the second half and then doing nothing with it. Sandro Tonali looked half asleep and Jacob Murphy ... well, the less said about him the better.

The good news is, though, that none of these problems ... except maybe the Murphy one ... aren't fixable.

Could Eddie Howe use Bruno's knock to make the big call for Saturday?

A week on the training pitch and some hard graft will fix a lot of these issues. We've seen what this side can do. Three wins on the bounce wasn't a fluke.

However, it's clear that changes need to be made and with Bruno Guimaraes picking up a knock last night, the most difficult change may be made for Howe going into Saturday's game against Crystal Palace.

Making Bruno captain has made it so much harder for Eddie Howe to drop the Brazilian, but if he's carrying a knock he has the perfect excuse to try Tonali in that holding role again after he played it to perfection against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
