Newcastle United have received a small pick-me-up ahead of Saturday's game at Luton Town.

Alexander Isak has been missing from the squad for the last couple of games after his groin injury flared up again.

The £63million record signing returned to fitness ahead of Callum Wilson and was trusted to lead the line for several games before Wilson returned from injury.

Alexander Isak looks set to make a return to the squad for Saturday

Despite his return, Isak never looked anywhere near 100% fit in any of the games he played, so to see him withdrawn from the squad was a shock to nobody.

However, we only expected it to be for one game more as a precaution, but the striker has missed out on the last two matches against Fulham and Chelsea.

Now, though, Edde Howe has told The Chronicle he expects Isak to be back in contention to play some part against The Hatters on Saturday.

Howe confirmed that Isak has been playing with an injury

"Alex isn’t doing too bad. He’s been playing recently, but still isn’t 100 per cent with a groin problem.

"We just felt it was probably the right time to take him out. He’s put himself on the pitch for us because Callum’s not been fit, and he’s played a lot of minutes. But he’s not 100 per cent fit, and I want to try to get him 100 per cent if physically possible.

"But with the further injuries we’ve had, I don’t know if that will be the case."

This would be good news at the best of times, but given how much football Callum Wilson has had to play since returning from injury, having the ability to swap between the two is essential.

The further injuries Howe was referring to are of course Anthony Gordon and Emil Krafth who both took knocks and looked in some discomfort on Tuesday night. There's also Fabian Schar and Joelinton who were both withdrawn in the game against Fulham.

Besides the injuries there is also the conundrum of what to do with Kieran Trippier who clearly has something going on that we're not privy to that's affecting his concentration.

Whatever happens, and whoever is fit enough, surely Newcastle have the quality to come away with a victory on Saturday. Right? Yeah, surely.
