Jose Mourinho continues to be linked to the Newcastle United hot seat despite the fact that Eddie Howe is still very much the manager.

There was a point during this season when the tide started to turn on Eddie Howe after being knocked out of two cup competitions in a week and going on a poor run of form, but most of that noise was coming from a place of frustration rather than common sense or logic.

Newcastle have endured a shocking season in terms of the amount of injuries the squad has picked up, and especially the duration of time those injuries have kept players out for.

Eddie Howe rode the storm very well

So with half a squad to work with, it really didn't matter who the manager was, the odds were very much stacked against them. Eddie Howe has managed to ride the storm and has come through it okay.

Alan Shearer is happy with Eddie Howe at the helm

That hasn't stopped the media linking Jose Mourinho with the job, especially when he parted ways with Roma. The Portuguese has often spoken of his admiration of Newcastle which was instilled in him by the late, great Sir Bobby Robson when they worked together at Barcelona.

Add to the fact that as soon as any club comes into money, Mourinho is instantly linked to that club. It's almost as if he's the only manager to ever buy success.

However, we, along with many other people, think Mourinho's best days are behind him and it seems that Alan Shearer is in the same camp.

Shearer is happy how things are

In a Q&A episode of The Rest Is Football podcastt, Shearer was asked about Mourinho taking over from Eddie Howe and Shearer answered in no uncertain terms.

"He has had an amazing career, Jose, where he goes next I’m not sure. But, no, I am very happy with Eddie Howe at Newcastle and the job he has done and the role he is doing.”

To quote those cringeworthy Bobby Robson memes ... you'll do for me, bonny lad.
