Alexander Isak has been in fine form again for Newcastle United this season drawing high praise from fans, journalists and pundits alike.
It's no surprise that he is consistently being linked with a move to a "bigger club" but Newcastle's project is a good one and the club are moving in the right direction, so they feel confident that they can keep the Swede at the club.
If Newcastle manage to secure Champions League football this season it will go a long way to quietening those voices who keep trying to push the agenda that Isak will leave.
Newcastle kept up the pace in the race for Champions League qualification on Wednesday by beating Brentford, and although Manchester City and Chelsea also won in midweek, Newcastle still have a one-game advantage over both of those clubs with just a two-point gap to overcome.
Meanwhile, Alexander Isak's first-half goal against Brentford on Wednesday was his 20th in the Premier League this season making him the first Newcastle player in history to hit 20 goals in back-to-back seasons, something Alan Shearer was adamant could not be right.
Gary Lineker teased Alan Shearer on The Rest Is Football podcast before reading out the statistic.
“Producer Harry has just handed me a statistic that is my favourite statistic I have ever read out on this podcast.
“I’m actually stunned, I’m not sure this can possibly be true. Alexander Isak is the first player in Newcastle’s history to score 20-plus goals in back-to-back Premier League seasons.”
Alan Shearer was gobsmacked asking the producer to double-check.
“I would doubt that, get producer Harry to check that! Get producer Harry to check the stats, please!”
Lineker even rubbed salt into the wound saying that when he saw it he felt sure that Andy Cole would have done it at least.
Ouch, Alan. We can't actually believe Shearer never hit 20 goals in back-to-back seasons for Newcastle. That's crazy. But as the former Newcastle striker said, he did have injury problems that played a part in that.
“Actually, the second season I was injured wasn’t I? I would just check that. Injuries curtailed that, honestly.”
It just goes to show how brilliant Alexander Isak really is.
