Paul Mitchell is yet to make his first real signing for Newcastle United since joining the club as sporting director last summer.
Arriving during he summer window, Mitchell took a step back from the recruitment side as the plans were already in place - the plan seemingly being to not spend anything.
That was certainly the plan in January too as PSR worries continue to hinder the club's progress, but it's now being said that the club are in a much healthier position this summer and will be very active in the transfer market.
In what could be a goal-line tap-in for Mitchell, Newcastle have been weighing up a move for Monaco star Maghnes Akliouche having scouted him as France U21s beat England 5-3 during the international break.
Mitchell joined Newcastle after leaving Monaco where Akliouche has come through the academy and now The Boot Room are reporting that the Magpies could try to bring the right-sided attacker to Tyneside.
Newcastle are desperate for at least one right-winger this summer after selling Miguel Almiron back to Atlanta United. Although in fairness, the club needed a new winger before Miggy was flogged.
TBR reports that Akliouche is being 'seriously considered' as a right-wing target heading into the summer and that he is keen on a move to Tyneside.
The 23-year-old is having a good season with Monaco having provided 10 assists and six goals in 36 games in all competitions. Two goals and two assists have come in the Champions League, too.
Former Chelsea man and current Monaco star spoke of how his teammate has matured this season as he continues to improve.
“We see him progressing. He is a different player to the one from the start of last season.
“Before he was a bit of a ‘kid’ but he has matured. In his game, he often makes the right decisions. He is really a very good player.”
No price has been mentioned for Akliouche but Newcastle have been keeping tabs on him for a while and it seems that the interest is genuine and possibly growing.
We'll have to wait and see if he becomes a primary target or is brought in as well as another winger, such as Bryan Mbeumo to flesh out the squad with European football confirmed for next season already.
