Newcastle United endured one of their most injury-hit seasons in recent memory in the 2023/24 campaign.

Last season Newcastle topped the charts of most days missed through injury in the Premier League by quite a clear margin and everyone was hoping that with the end of the season would come the end to that bad luck.

With Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman both already on the long-term absentee list after undergoing surgery on ACL injuries, they are now set to be joined on the casualty list by Lewis Miley.

Eddie Howe decided to call time on Lewis Miley's season early after the youngster picked up an injury on international duty. The call was taken to ensure that Miley had plenty of time to recover and wasn't forced back into a situation that could potentially exacerbate his back injury causing further issues down the line.

While that may well have worked as far as the 17-year-old rising star's back is concerned, he now faces a new issue in the form of a metatarsal injury.

The Chronicle have reported that MIley will undergo surgery in London on the injury and will be out for 12 weeks which rules him out of the entirety of pre-season and the opening six weeks of the Premier League season.

Having just sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, this will come as quite a blow for Eddie Howe as he now finds himself two central midfielders down ahead of the new campaign.

Fortunately, Sandro Tonali is due to return to action for the third game of the season after he's finished serving his 10-month ban and Joe Willock should be back to full fitness too.

Also, there is still a lot of time left in the transfer window with central midfielders still being linked to the club, although we expect Sean Longstaff will be moved on before we look to bring in any more bodies in that department.

It's a huge blow for Miley who gained a lot of praise for his performances last season when the injury crisis thrust him into the starting lineup for more games than he or Eddie Howe were expecting.
