Reports form Italy are suggesting that Newcastle United have made a positive move in this transfer window, albeit one that has failed to move the needle for the selling club.

The Magpies are reportedly interested in Argentinian winger Nicolas Gonzalez who is contracted to Serie A side Fiorentina.

Indeed, La Nazione (via Sport Witness) are reporting that the Magpies made a bid for the 26-year-old a few days ago which has been deemed by Fiorentina to be way below what they'd consider for Gonzalez.

Last summer Brentford submitted a €43million (£36million) offer for Gonzalez that led to nothing and it's believed Newcastle's bid was even less than that.

Nicolas Gonzales is a double Copa America winner

Quite what Newcastle's plan is here we're not sure. If they are seriously interested in Gonzalez and are just dipping a toe in the water, or whether this is just another famous case of misdirection from the club, only time will tell.

But at 26 years old with two Copa America titles under his belt, and having bagged 16 goals and five assists in 44 games for Fiorentina last season, we could certainly do a lot worse.

Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Pradè said at the start of the summer that Gonzalez is '99% untransferable' so it does seem odd that Newcastle thought a low-ball offer would be enough to move that 1% in the right direction.

The story originating in Italy is a red flag

Given that the story originated from Italy, namely a 'paper based in Florence, also puts up a red flag or two as it tends to track that stories originating from the selling club's side rarely pan out.

Whatever the truth, it's yet another name on that list of right-wingers as Paul Mitchell and Co cast a wide net in finding the right replacement for Miguel Almiron.

Just make something happen and fast. That is the theme of the day. GET A MOVE ON.
