Lee Carsley has two wins in two games as England manager after a successful international break but The FA are now set to step up their recruitment drive for a permanent manager and Newcastle United's Eddie Howe is still on the shortlist.

After Gareth Southgate put us out of our misery by stepping down as England boss after guiding the Three Lions to their second consecutive European Championship final with the most boring and frustrating brand of football ever seen, Eddie Howe has been linked with taking over as England boss.

In the meantime, England U21 manager Lee Carsely, who led his charges to European Championship victory in 2023 with Anthony Gordon picking up Player of the Tournament, was handed the job on an interim basis.

The Daily Mail now claims that Carsley wants the job full time, but despite his excellent start, The FA are keeping their options open and are about to start interviewing external candidates.

The FA have plenty of names on their list besides Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe's name was of course mentioned as was Graham Potter's who has been out of a job since leaving Chelsea.

There are a few foreign managers being eyed for the role. Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is one, but the German is said to not be interested. Pep Guardiola is another, which would be immense, but would he turn his back on Manchester City?

Mauricio Pochettino was a favourite at one point but he recently became the manager of the USA Men's National Team.

We're backing Eddie Howe to stay at Newcastle United

After the turbulent summer, Newcastle fans are nervous about what Eddie Howe's intentions are, despite him saying in interviews that he's happy and looking forward to a long career at St James' Park.

The rough start to life working alongside Paul Mitchell could have potentially pushed Howe towards the exit door, or at least given him pause for thought.

We're still pretty confident that Howe will remain at Newcastle though, he has a lot of unfinished business here and as we've stated before, he's too much of a hands-on coach to go into international coaching just yet, he loves the daily grind way too much.
