Newcastle United have to be very clever with how they spend their money this summer to avoid falling foul of PSR.

Paul Mitchell has a monolithic task ahead of him as he tries to overhaul the squad to make it strong enough to sustain a challenge across four competitions next season, but he also needs to do so on a strict budget thanks to PSR.

The fact that Newcastle need to add reinforcements to so many positions means we'll not likely see any 'big' signings made this summer, rather a series of small-mid priced players.

That being said, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Mitchell could unearth some bargains. Players entering the final year of their contract, players who've handed in transfer requests and of course, free agents.

Newcastle must find someone to compete with Jacob Murphy

Tottenham Hotspur are favourites to sign Tyler Dibling

A player who may seem like a bargain this summer after having originally been hit with a £100 million price tag is Southampton's Tyler Dibling, who is now expected to move clubs for less than half of that figure.

However, as reported by TeamTalk, it's Tottenham Hotspur who lead the way for Dibling's signing, with Newcastle's interest in the young forward having cooled recently.

Southampton still think they can keep hold of Dibling, banking on his loyalty to the club to keep him there beyond the summer, while Tottenham think an offer of around £45 million plus add-ons could get a deal done.

Newcastle need someone to compete with Jacob Murphy for a starting spot

Meanwhile, TeamTalk claims that Jacob Murphy's form in the second half of the season will have given Newcastle second thoughts about spending big on a right winger.

We're not sure we agree with that idea. Murphy is our only right winger at the moment, and we desperately need to add another player for that position. Bringing in someone who isn't better than Murphy simply doesn't make sense.

We love Jacob Murphy, but he's wildly inconsistent. Yes, he's had an amazing run of form lately, but we all know how poor he can be when he's not at the top of his game. We also need somebody younger to come in and compete for that spot.

Newcastle may not spend wild sums this summer, but if we are going to go big on one position, it's likely to be right wing.
