So often it seems like once Newcastle United decide they like a player, they will keep trying to sign them even if it takes years.

We've seen so many names pop back up on the Newcastle radar after failing to sign them in the past. It begs the question of how much truth is in the stories and how much of it is just journalists looking through their back catalogue for stuff to resurrect for something to do. I'm being very cynical today, aren't I?

One thing we do know with some degree of certainty is that Paul Mitchell will be looking to land players for several positions this summer, as Newcastle's squad is in desperate need of strengthening.

Central defence, right-wing, goalkeeper and striker are the more pressing areas in need of attention, which is why this latest report comes with many question marks.

The report suggests Matteo Guendouzi is a 'top target' for Newcastle

Tuttomercatoweb are now claiming that Newcastle are once again looking at Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi as a 'top target' for the Magpies this summer.

Newcastle do have a long-standing interest in the former Arsenal man, but to suggest that a midfielder is Newcastle's 'top target' seems a bit wide of the mark.

The Magpies have arguably the best midfield in the Premier League, and while we could do with another option or two on the bench, especially if Sean Longstaff leaves this summer, midfield is hardly a priority.

Matteo Guendouzi would make for a decent squad player

The 25-year-old Frenchman isn't a bad player by any means, and would be a good addition to Newcastle's squad, but he's hardly a priority signing for what we can see.

Beyond Newcastle's top midfield trio, there's Lewis Miley and Guendouzi's former Arsenal teammate Joe Willock to give other options, and it certainly wouldn't hurt to add a third option.

Matteo Guendouzi may well be a Newcastle target once again, but we'd be very surprised if he's one of the first moves Paul Mitchell makes this summer.
