Newcastle United's visit to Old Trafford has a new date after Manchester United's involvement in the FA Cup semi-finals caused the fixture to be postponed.

The fixture now has a new date and it has now been moved to the penultimate game of the season, which could be massive in deciding where each team finishes.

Sky Sports have also picked up the game for live broadcast with the fixture now to be played on Wednesday 15th May with an 8pm Kick-off.

While far from as bad as a midweek London trip, it's still another late-night away day for the TV cameras.

Newcastle's run-in takes a whole new shape now

In fairness, this wasn't just a case of the TV companies waving their hands of fate given that this fixture was always going to have be rearranged after Manchester United progressed in the FA Cup.

After Newcastle take on Tottenham on Saturday, Manchester United are the only other "big six" team we have left to face this season, and that would have been the following fixture meaning we'd have got both of them out of the way for a nice "easy" run-in.

Now this game takes on a whole new dimension given the timing of the fixture.

The new date means this fixture is potentially massive

Newcastle are currently trying to close the two-point gap on Manchester United to steal sixth spot and guarantee a European spot next season. While finishing eighth could still provide a spot in the Europa Conference League thanks to the new-look Champions League, it still depends on the performance of English clubs in the current competition, so it's not guaranteed.

That means that now, when the two sides meet, there's potentially everything to play for with just one game remaining after that.

This is one of those rare times when a fixture change has actually added something exciting.
