Newcastle United are still in the process of trimming the squad before adding more players ahead of an important campaign.

The Magpies are unburdened by the midweek fixtures of European competition and as such will be expected to press home that advantage to advance in the Premier League and make a strong push for the Champions League places next season.

First, though, Eddie Howe must cut some of the weaker and/or older players from the squad before adding younger and hopefully better ones throughout the summer.

So far Newcastle's incoming transfer business has been underwhelming, and the players Newcastle have had to let go have also been ones fans would have preferred the club keep.

Eddie Howe and the board are at odds over Wilson's future

There are a couple of players who fit the ageing and declining bill who have one foot out of the door with Newcastle keen to shift on Miguel Almiron and potentially even Callum Wilson.

The conflict is that Eddie Howe wants to keep Wilson next season, but the club see him as a sellable asset this summer with his contract set to expire next year.

A move to Saudi Arabia has been mooted for both players and while Miggy digs his heels in, journalist Ben Jacobs is hearing that Wilson may not be so stubborn.

Callum Wilson could be tempted by a Saudi move

While speaking on NUFC Matters, Jacobs has shared that he's been told from people close to Wilson that he would now consider a move to Saudi Arabia.

“It will depend on if the player wants to go, I spoke to someone close to the camp of Wilson and I was led to believe that he would strongly consider it (a move to Saudi) at this point in his career.”

That could be ideal for Newcastle as they not only receive money for a decent player, but he doesn't end up going to a rival Premier League side to potentially haunt us next season with West Ham still keen on a move for Wilson.

It just remains to be seen who gets their own way now between Eddie and the board. Of course, if Wilson is sold, that leaves Howe needing to find two centre-forwards this summer which won't be an easy task.
