Newcastle United were prepared to sell winger Anthony Gordon to Liverpool before talks broke down, it has been revealed.
The Magpies PSR compliance struggles have been well documented over the last month, with the club needing to make up as much as £30million to avoid any penalties including a points deduction.
It's gotten to the point that the club are desperate to make up the outstanding balance and are resorting to offloading their most valuable assets.
With a points deduction now looking likely, it's in the club's hands to make a decision on whether to take the hit or lose a star player.
Gordon; a Liverpool fan may be disappointed to hear that the deal broke down. But Newcastle fans will be delighted that their star boy will stay at the club for the time being.
Craig Hope of the Daily Mail reported that Liverpool admires Gordon but the deal that was proposed involved young defender Jarell Quansah going the other way.
The Reds aren't prepared to lose the 21-year-old who they believe will be a future England international.
Hope also states that the 23-year-old is happy at St James' Park and loves working with Toon boss Eddie Howe who has undoubtedly gotten the best out of the England international since joining for £45m 18 months ago.
However, Hope also states that Gordon is aware of discussions between Newcastle and his boyhood club.
Gordon is a fan favourite on Tyneside thanks to his performances last season which won him the club's Player of the Season award.
