Fabian Schar was shown a straight red card in Newcastle United's first game of the season against Southampton last Saturday.

It was game week one of the new season and we were already complaining about the officials after Craig Pawson not only bought Ben Brereton Diaz's acting but also left him a tip with VAR failing to intervene and inject some common sense to proceedings.

The debate raged on with former officials and some pundits claiming that Pawson was left with no choice due to the way the rules are, but others pointing out that BBD was equally as guilty of putting his head in so the punishment should have been the same for both parties.

A straight red card equals a three-game suspension and with Newcastle still faltering to get the deal done for Marc Guehi that leaves Eddie Howe short at the back already.

Thoughts and Prayers go out to BBD

Newcastle appealed the decision to send off Fabian Schar

It was confirmed this morning by Eddie Howe that Newcastle did appeal the red card, but failed in their attempts to get it overturned.

The club are still awaiting the written results of the appeal which will explain their reasons for abiding by the referee's decision.

We'd be lying if we said we were surprised that the appeal was unsuccessful. As harsh as the dismissal was, and as unfair as it was in terms of the disparity between the punishment of the two players involved, going by the rules, it was a justified red.

Fabian Schar will miss the next three games

This of course means that Fabian Schar will miss the game on Sunday against Bournemouth as well as the midweek Carabao Cup match against Nottingham Forest and the game against Tottenham next Sunday.

Hopefully by the time to Tottenham game comes around we'll have Marc Guehi or indeed, another centre-back who improves the side through the door.

We're probably asking a bit too much for them to be available for the Forest game on Wednesday aren't we?
