Sky Sports have already labelled Sandro Tonali's stunning effort against Brentford on Wednesday night as a goal-of-the-season contender.

The Italian hit a 74th-minute wonder strike to give Newcastle the lead at St James' Park on Wednesday night after Bryan Mbeumo's penalty ruled out Alexander Isak's goal right on half time.

Many Newcastle, and probably Brentford fans in fairness, were in absolute disbelief as Tonali's fizzing shot somehow found the back of the net.

I can't say exactly what my verbal reaction was when I saw it, but there's a very well-known acronym for it: WTF?!

Jay Bothroyd believes Sandro Tonali scored the goal of the season tonight

Also having to be a bit more reserved with their reaction was Sky Sports' Jay Bothroyd who was watching the game for Sky Sports News Soccer Special.

Paul Merson was reporting on his game when you could hear Boythroyd off camera saying "Oh my God. Oh my God!" before apologising to Merson and taking over.

Bothroyd was so shocked by what he'd just seen that he had to be prompted to say who the goal was for and who scored it.

Jay Bothroyd said it was such a good goal he couldn't even describe it

Interrupting Merson, an excited Bothroyd couldn't believe what he'd just seen.

"Hold on a minute, Merse. You might not see a better goal than this. If he meant this ... you might not see a better goal. It's goal of the season if you've seen it."

It was at this point he was told to clarify who and what he was talking about.

"Newcastle, I can't even believe it, Newcastle, Tonali, he's pinged it almost from the corner flag in the near post. I think he's meant to do it as well. I can't believe this. This is an unbelievable goal from Tonali."
