Jacob Murphy's double puts him among some elite players in terms of current form - There's no stopping him

What a season Jacob Murphy is having for Newcastle United this season. His never-say-die attitude has paid dividends for him under Eddie Howe.

Many fans had completely written off Jacob Murphy - and by many fans, I mean me - but this season he has been nothing short of phenomenal.

It started a bit rough for the winger with a few dodgy performances, but as 2024 drew to a close, Murphy started to really find his form and began a brilliant partnership with Alexander Isak.

As the BBC pointed out tonight, Murphy is now behind only Mo Salah and Isak in terms of goal contributions since the start of December.

After the game, Murphy was interviewed by Sky Sports and in true Murphy style, he admitted that he was lucky with his second goal after Fabian Schar's audacious 55-yard effort came off the bar and fell to Murphy's feet.

"I thought I was clean through if Fabi had passed it, and then he didn't, and then I don't know what made me follow it in but, yeah, I followed it in and as it hit off the bar I thought 'do I just first-time finish?'. But then it came back really quickly..."

Watching it back as he was talking through it, Murphy couldn't help but laugh at his control of the ball before the finish.

"Look at that. That's horrible. It was a bit scary when it came back, yeah, I was thinking first-time finish or control it, and then by the time I controlled it about seven times I just got it out of my feet and scored."

Fabian Schar's effort has written him into the Premier League history books

As great as it was to see Murphy continue his goal run and grab a brace, it would have been something else if Fabian Schar's effort had dipped just that little bit more and gone in.

However, he now holds the record for the longest shot in the Premier League to hit the woodwork, so at least that's something.

Eddie Howe's record-breaking Mags continue to write their names in the record books.
