'Wouldn't be fazed': Joeleon Lescott talks up Newcastle United star as possible signing for Everton

As much as Newcastle United need to add to their squad this summer, the reality is that there are still a few players who could be moved on.

The aim this summer is to start next season with a stronger, deeper squad than we've had in the last two seasons. Tough lessons were learned in the 2023/24 season when Newcastle played in the Champions League.

Eddie Howe's paper-thin squad fell apart under the weight of the extra fixtures that Champions League football adds to the season and an injury crisis broke out through the squad.

Avoiding a repeat of that will be paramount for Newcastle going into another Champions League campaign, but as long as the incomings outnumber the outgoings, Newcastle should be on the right track.

Callum Wilson to Everton makes sense

Joleon Lescott believes Everton should sign Callum Wilson this summer

Sean Longstaff is one player expected to leave the club this summer, even though his homegrown status would be valuable, the fact that he'd be a pure profit sale is too tempting for the Magpies to pass up.

Meanwhile, Callum Wilson's contract is rapidly expiring and while he has been offered an incentive-based deal, it's starting to look likely that the No. 9 will leave the club at the end of the month, and former England star Joleon Lescott has told Betway (via The Chronicle) that Everton would be an ideal destination for the 33-year-old.

"I’ll tell you who wouldn’t be a bad one – Callum Wilson. He wouldn’t be a bad signing because he focuses on goals, has a high work rate and that is what Everton fans love. As much as you’re scoring goals, what are you giving?

"He plays with his heart on his sleeve. Knowing him as a person, the temperament of the club and the expectation – he’s coming from Newcastle where the expectation is very high, so he wouldn’t be fazed by the expectation of Everton either."

Wilson to Everton isn't a bad shout

We've often baulked at the idea of signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton as his injury-prone nature is too similar to that of Callum Wilson, and so it would be hypocritcal to say that it would be a good move for Wilson to go to Everton for the same reasons.

However, despite his age and the fact that he had zero Premier League goals last season, Wilson's overall strike rate in the Premier League is far better than DCL's, and if the deal was right, it's a move that could make sense for the Toffees.

As far as Newcastle are concerned, it seems inevitable Wilson is going to leave on a free anyway, so it doesn't really affect us where he ends up - unless of course he comes back to haunt us next season.
