If there's one thing that has kept me amused recently it's messing about with AI and seeing just how flawed it still is, at least at a consumer level - Skynet is coming for us!
While I've been using it mostly for creating daft images, including the Magpies attacking our opponents' images that go with our previews, there has been a growing trend of writers asking AI to predict the outcome of upcoming fixtures in the name of content.
Give Me Sport has today done an article asking AI to predict the table, and while I've not read it, I have 100% stolen the idea, but I feel like I should acknowledge them for the idea. That's integrity. And humility, clearly.
So, I fired up ChatGPT and asked it to predict the final Premier League standings after Gameweek 38 and it duly obliged.
I don't think ChatGPT understood what I was really going for when I first asked it and it just spewed out the current table and then added some stuff to the bottom that was almost a prediction, but with some refinement to my question, it gave me a full predicted table complete with explanations, so here it is:
1. Liverpool 🏆 - Consistent performances and squad depth will see them lift the title.
2. Arsenal - Strong defensively but just short of a title challenge.
3. Manchester City - Late resurgence but too much ground to make up.
4. Chelsea - Improved under new management, securing a Champions League spot.
5. Newcastle United - Just missing out on the top four but securing Europa League football.
6. Aston Villa - Continues their upward trajectory and secures a European spot.
7. Tottenham Hotspur - A mixed season but finishes strong.
8. Manchester United - Struggles with inconsistency lead to a disappointing season.
9. Brighton & Hove Albion - A solid season but lacking the firepower to push higher.
10. Nottingham Forest - A surprisingly strong season but dips in the final stretch.
11. Brentford - Mid-table security with a few big results.
12. West Ham United - Some struggles but a comfortable finish.
13. Fulham - Avoids relegation comfortably.
14. Crystal Palace - Mid-table finish, relying on individual brilliance.
15. Everton - Struggles with financial constraints but avoids the drop.
16. Bournemouth - Mixed results but does enough to stay up.
17. Leicester City - Just survives in their first season back.
18. Wolverhampton Wanderers ❌ - Relegated after a tough season.
19. Ipswich Town ❌ - Good fight, but not enough to stay up.
20. Southampton ❌ - Record-low points total and inevitable relegation.
AI has Newcastle United finishing fifth, which may be enough to land Champions League football, although it states we'll nab a Europa League spot.
The big shock is seeing Leicester escape the drop at the expense of Wolverhampton Wanderers. We love seeing Tottenham and Man United in seventh and eighth, respectively.
ChatGPT expects Chelsea to leapfrog Newcastle again by the end of the season and take that fourth spot. What are your thoughts? Would you be happy with this outcome?
