Will Osula hopes his wonder goal against Manchester United will help him get more chances at Newcastle United amid uncertain future
Will Osula's future at Newcastle United has been in question since a proposed move to Eintracht Frankfurt fell through on deadline day in the summer.
Newcastle pulled the plug on the deal after Frankfurt tried to change from a transfer to a loan with an obligation. It proved to be a good move in the end as Newcastle lost Yoane Wissa to injury just a couple of days later.
Osula was given a few opportunities in the team and scored a couple of goals before he picked up an injury of his own, which kept him out of action from November until the end of January.
Eddie Howe has turned to Osula from the bench a few times since he returned to fitness, even giving him a shot in the starting lineup against Qarabag, which didn't quite go as planned, with many fans writing him off after a poor performance.
Will Osula is focused on doing well for Newcastle amid transfer rumours
On Wednesday night, Osula came on against Manchester United ahead of Yoane Wissa, causing confusion amongst the fanbase, but five minutes later, the Danish Under-21 star was the toast of the Toon after scoring a brilliant goal.
Now the 22-year-old has told The Chronicle that he hopes that goal will provide him more opportunities to impress at Newcastle, insisting that he remains committed to the club despite all the transfer talk.
"Well, I'm obviously at Newcastle and I always have been signed here, so that's been the focus until that's not the case.
"You know what I mean? But at this moment that's the case and my focus is fully on Newcastle and doing my best here and having an impact.
"I've had opportunities now and I'm playing more, so I'm really happy with that. I want to keep playing and get more opportunities. So, hopefully [the goal] can help me and push me on to play more and perform more."
Will Osula still has a lot to improve in his game, but there's definitely a player in there
Newcastle are lacking a consistent striker right now, and it certainly looks as though Osula is preferred to Wissa at the moment, while Nick Woltemade is being deployed in a deeper role as Howe tries to find a place for him.
So if ever there was an opportunity for Osula to make an impact and stake a claim to a place in the starting lineup, it's now.
Eddie Howe has admitted that Osula still has a lot to work on with his game, and that's clear to see whenever you watch him in action, but every now and then, we get a glimpse of the player beneath the headless chicken.
