It was another bad day at the office for Newcastle United on Saturday as they lost a one-goal lead in second-half stoppage time to come away from Selhurst Park with a 1-1 draw.

In truth, even a draw was more than the Magpies deserved out of the game after registering just one shot at goal all game and relying on a Marc Guehi own goal to take the lead.

Crystal Palace had plenty of attempts and were it not for Nick Pope and Dan Burn, would have won this one comfortably.

Once again, Newcastle tried to control the game with possession but had absolutely no idea how to break down the opposition's resolute defence.

Newcastle can't expect to win games without creating chances

Newcastle's inability to create clear-cut chances is a curse this season but more frustrating is the side's reluctance to just put the ball in the mixer and see what happens, whether that be a cross or a shot from range.

Yesterday's own goal showed that if you put the ball in the area anything can happen and we need to just rely on the law of averages more.

Anthony Gordon was the one who provided the cross that was bundled in by Newcastle target Guehi, and after the game he told Newcastle World that he thought the side played well until the final third.

Anthony Gordon was devastated after conceding a late, late goal

Echoing what Eddie Howe had said, Gordon agreed that he and his teammates need to be better in front of goal.

“It is devastating. I actually thought we played and defended really well, and we were together in everything that we done. It was a proper away performance but it was just that last little bit.

“I feel like that if we want to be a top team that can’t happen. I think we’ve become nearly men too much this season where we are nearly playing well for 90 minutes, we are nearly scoring and playing well for 30 minutes then the other team will score and throw us off track.

“I feel like we are just coming up short too much and I don’t think we can do that too often if we want to be a top team. That’s two massive games where we have lost big opportunities.”

Don't worry, it's only Liverpool up next. No bother at all.
