Alan Shearer's Premier League Team of the Week is very Newcastle United-heavy following win over Man United
Newcastle United defied the odds to beat Manchester United on Wednesday night at St James' Park.
Newcastle were reduced to 10 men before half-time thanks to a truly awful decision by the referee to give Jacob Ramsey a second yellow card for simulation.
Fortunately, that only served to galvanise Newcastle, who then won a penalty a couple of minutes later, which was put away by Anthony Gordon.
In the ninth minute of three added on, Bruno Fernandes plonked the ball on Casemiro's head for an equaliser, but late in the second half, Newcastle got their revenge as Will Osula scored a wonder goal to hand Newcastle the win.
Alan Shearer picked three Newcastle players and the manager in his Team of the Week
On a night when Newcastle could have just buckled, they put in a top-class performance, and that was reflected in Alan Shearer's picks for the Premier League Team of the Week as he chose three Newcastle players and manager Eddie Howe in his selections.
"The Magpies' goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale starred on his first Premier League start since Boxing Day, while midfielder Joelinton and match-winning forward William Osula are also in the XI. Meanwhile, Eddie Howe is picked as the manager after his inspired decision to bring on Osula in the 85th minute."
The fact that Will Osula was selected despite only coming on the field at the 85-minute mark is really a testament to just how good his goal was. Winning the ball on the edge of his own area, passing to Kieran Trippier, then continuing his run down the wing, keeping the ball in, cutting inside with a couple of stepovers and then unleashing an inch-perfect curling shot into the far post.
Aaron Ramsdale was superb on Wednesday night
Joelinton was imperious throughout the whole game, but almost ruined it by sarcastically applauding hopeless referee Peter Bankes after being booked.
Meanwhile, the pressure was on Aaron Ramsdale, who replaced Nick Pope after Eddie Howe made the call to drop his first-choice keeper after another howler against Everton. Despite the pressure, though, Ramsdale made some truly world-class saves to keep Newcastle in the game.
The 10 men of Newcastle truly deserved the three points against the 12 men of Man United on the day, and Alan Shearer could have picked the entire Newcastle XI after that performance... yes, even Jacob Ramsey, just to make a point.
