Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has this morning shared an image of Sandro Tonali in training ahead of Newcastle's Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund tomorrow.

If Tonali doesn't learn of his punishment for his part in the illegal betting scandal today or tomorrow, he could be available to face BVB at St. James' Park.

Reports from Italy suggest that Tonali is set to be handed a 10-month suspension, something which Downie mentioned in his X post.

Given how harsh the sanction could have been, and that yesterday it was reported that the ban could be 12 months with an additional six months of rehabilitation during which he will be able to play; if it is to be 10 months, Tonali has got off lightly.

While Tonali might feel relieved that it wasn't as bad as it could have been, it's still a hefty blow for Newcastle who had zero involvement or awareness until the story broke.

Now the Magpies will be unable to field their £55 million signing for the rest of the season through no fault of their own.

Paul Merson has called for punishments to be reviewed

It's a point that Paul Merson raised at the weekend when he called for the punishment for such offences to be reconsidered as it's the club that suffers as well as the player.

With the rumour of 10 months growing ever stronger it feels likely we will find out today and, as such, Tonali will miss the game against Dortmund.
