Since Eddie Howe took over at Newcastle United, the Magpies have started to swoop into the England set-up once again.

Having a Newcastle player in the England squad had become quite a rare occurrence in the years under Mike Ashley and his various managers, but Eddie Howe has changed all that.

Indeed, his first signing as Newcastle manager was an established England international in Kieran Trippier, and with a bit of focus on recruiting English players, we've grown our England contingent.

As well as that, though, our very own academy players are now breaking into the England side with former academy player Elliot Anderson now a big fixture in Thomas Tuchel's squad. Even though Anderson is no longer a Newcastle player, he's still one of our own.

Darren Ambrose has backed Lewis Miley for England

Now, former Toon winger Darren Ambrose has backed another academy graduate to break into the England set-up. Ambrose told talkSPORT that Lewis Miley is destined for the senior England side, but feels next year's World Cup may come just too soon for the 19-year-old.

“Every time I watch him, I think he’s fantastic,” he said. “He’s a future England player, for sure. Definitely a future England international.

“Maybe the summer (the 2026 World Cup) has come a bit too early, but I think for him, in the next few years, he’s breaking into that England team. He just looks so calm, comfortable and composed on the ball. He’s got that tenacity as well that I really like.”

Eddie Howe has been playing the long game with Lewis Miley

Miley's performance last weekend as Newcastle battered Everton saw the youngster bag a goal and an assist, to cap off what was an accomplished overall performance.

He was good again on Tuesday against Spurs, and we back him to keep his place in the side on Saturday ahead of Sandro Tonali, who picked up a knock on Tuesday night.

At times, we have been frustrated that Eddie Howe hasn't used Miley enough, especially when we've seen Joe Willock in the side ahead of him, but we also appreciate what Howe is trying to do by not trying to heap too much pressure on him. Hopefully, it's a long-term strategy that pays off.
