Eddie Howe says he expects £39m summer signing to start proving himself very soon after slow start at Newcastle United
Newcastle United had a strange summer in the transfer window. On the surface, it looked like the Magpies had recruited very well, but so far the Premier League-proven additions are the ones taking their time to settle in.
Newcastle took risks when signing Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade as neither had played in the Premier League before, but they have both adapted brilliantly.
Everyone expected the Premier League recruits to fall into the first team straight away and make an immediate impact. While we can't really knock Yoane Wissa, as he's been injured since he signed, Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey have struggled to adapt to Eddie Howe's style of play. The jury is still out on Aaron Ramsdale, but he's expected to get a run in the side now, so we'll soon see.
Jacob Ramsey picked up an ankle injury during his first and only Premier League start for Newcastle, and other than a start in the Champions League and one in the Carabao Cup, he's had to be happy coming off the bench of late.
Eddie Howe backs Jacob Ramsey to prove himself on the pitch for Newcastle
In his press conference this morning, Eddie Howe addressed Ramsey's struggles and put a lot of it down to that injury he picked up against Leeds United.
“He's doing really well, JJ. We're building him up physically, getting him to understand fully how we play.
“I've been very pleased with him actually. He's a very, very good footballer and I think we'll all see that very soon. Very composed, very rarely gives the ball away, but he's creative as well.
“So he had a nasty ankle injury at Leeds and when he came back, it was a case of, you could see he was a little bit short on fitness of where he needed to be to execute what we want him to.
“But he's getting there and he's in a lot better place now.”
Injuries have been an issue for Jacob Ramsey throughout his career
Jacob Ramsey often looked very impressive at Aston Villa, and it was seen as a bargain when Newcastle picked him up for just £39 million in the summer as Villa struggled to come under the PSR threshold.
However, injuries hampered him at Vill,a and early signs are that they threaten to do the same at Newcastle.
Fingers crossed that this is just a minor setback and that we'll soon see what Eddie Howe is seeing in training and the 24-year-old will come good.
