Newcastle United reportedly have several targets in mind to bolster their options down the right wing, but whether they will make a move in January or wait until the summer remains to be seen.
Quite who is the 'top priority' for the Magpies is unclear at this point with the likes of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford likely to be high on the list, however, deals for either of those would be nigh-on impossible to complete in January due to the sums involved and the likelihood of a Premier League club dealing with a rival being very low.
Johan Bakayoko from PSV and Kang-in Lee of PSG have both pretty much been ruled out as their clubs don't want to sell.
Newcastle aren't giving up, though, and are now looking to beat Aston Villa to the signing of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund according to German outlet Bild.
It has been reported that Villa and Malen have agreed personal terms already, but the two clubs have yet to agree on a fee, with Dortmund looking to recoup the £25 million they paid PSV in 2021.
£25 million sounds like a fee that Newcastle should be able to afford in January and with Malen being tipped to become one of 'the best players in the world' by Rafael Van Der Vaart, we should be making every effort to get in there first.
Tottenham are also contemplating a move to gazump Villa before they can agree a fee with Dortmund, so it could become a bit of a battle.
The 25-year-old is struggling for game time at Dortmund this season making just 13 appearances (six starts) however he has bagged three goals in those outings.
Bild claims Newcastle are yet to go 'all-in' on Malen, so it sounds like it's unlikely that Malen will be Tyneside-bound, especially if he's being viewed as a back-up should other bids fail.
The question is ... what bids? Have we actually made any moves yet in January? It doesn't feel like it.
