Heading into January, Newcastle United have a list of priorities in the transfer window with a right-winger second on that list behind shifting fringe players to raise funds.

However, even if Newcastle are successful in reducing the squad, and indeed, the wage bill, the club has gone out of its way to make sure that fans' expectations are tempered when it comes to potential incoming transfers.

There may be one or two additions, but they are unlikely to be big-money moves which almost completely rules out the acquisition of a top winger.

A goal-scoring right-sided forward won't come cheap, especially not in January and that has been typified by the latest surrounding Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo.

Bryan Mbeumo: £50 million may not be enough

Newcastle may have to fork out more than £50m if they want Bryan Mbeumo

Mbeumo has been said to be high on Newcastle's wish list and a fee of £50 million has been bandied about for months, which would already put Newcastle out of the running in January if reports of the Magpies' financial struggles with regards to PSR are to be believed.

However, The Daily Mail has now hinted that £50 million may not even be enough to tempt Brentford into selling.

They claim that it would take a 'very substantial offer' for the Bees to be moved.

We don't have long to wait now

Given Mbeumo's form this season, scoring 10 goals and three assists in 21 appearances, we understand Brentford's reluctance to sell.

We've never really been confident that our right-wing issue would be fully solved in January. It may get partially solved with the sale of Miguel Almiron, and thankfully, Jacob Murphy has hit stunning form at the right time, but whether he can sustain that until the summer is another matter.

There are only a couple of days until the transfer window opens so we don't have much longer to wait to get a better idea of the reality of the situation.
