It's been an odd couple of days in Newcastle United land with two big-name players linked with immediate moves away and one touted as having potentially played his last game for the club.

Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson have been linked with moves to Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid respectively and chatter around the two suggested that both players would be open to leaving this month.

Indeed, several outlets had gone as far as to say Trippier had verbally agreed the move to Bayern while Craig Hope suggested that should Atletico Madrid come in with a permanent offer for Wilson rather than a loan deal, the club could be tempted to sell and Wilson would be interested in the move.

Luke Edwards with the positive news for a change

As things tend to do when it comes to this club, the narrative has switched already with Luke Edwards now saying the club are standing firm and have no plans to sell either player.

We are inclined to believe Luke on this one as neither deal made sense.

If either were to go ahead, the one we could work around would be losing Kieran Trippier owing to having Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth with Harrison Ashby for the future too. But there was no way we could make the Callum Wilson one work as we're already short on numbers in his position, losing him would make no sense, and bringing in a replacement would leave us with the same problem.

Summer is shaping up to be very interesting

The big thing for both players is how influential they are, losing one would be a blow, but losing both would surely disintegrate the morale in the squad.

Also, given our owner's propensity to drag transfers out as long as possible, and selling clubs' need to mess around to try and squeeze more money out of us, the chances of getting in replacements for either player are minuscule.

All that being said, all bets are off in the summer, especially if all these new commercial deals kick in and open up spending opportunities again. We think there'll be a big squad overhaul in this off-season and pretty much anyone could go - although the likes of Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak are likely to stay as the plan is to build a team around those players.
