Newcastle United could be about to lose two players to the MLS this month as January exit activity starts to heat up.
Eddie Howe confirmed last night that Newcastle aren't looking at any players to come in this month, and while he also said his main aim is to keep his squad together, there are certainly a couple of players he can afford to lose.
Newcastle have been trying to offload Miguel Almiron for the last three transfer windows and it looks to finally be happening.
MLS side Charlotte FC approached Newcastle in the summer but the clubs couldn't agree on a fee, and now it looks like Miggy's former club Atlanta United have reached an agreement with the Magpies and the Paraguayan is set to return from whence he came for £10 million.
However, Charlotte FC aren't done with Newcastle yet, according to journalist Graeme Bailey who has told Geordie Boot Boys that they are now eyeing Matt Targett for a loan move.
“It does make a bit of sense, because It’s Dean Smith, who was his former boss at Aston Villa. They are one of the teams that like Miguel Almiron too.
“We know there has also been interest in Targett from Anderlecht and Frankfurt. There is a bit of interest in him, but whether a deal gets done…
“Newcastle are willing to let him go on loan. Eddie Howe likes him – they are not desperate to get him out the door. It does not do much for them in terms of PSR, as they are not selling him.
“It is not like an Almiron situation where they are looking to cash in.”
Matt Targett is on a hefty wage at Newcastle, and even getting him off the books, or at least a portion of his wages, for a few months via a loan deal could be a huge benefit to the Magpies.
With Lewis Hall playing so well and Dan Burn and Lloyd Kelly able to cover if needs be, Targett is surplus to requirements, especially given his absence record.
If we can secure a loan for the rest of the season and maybe offload him permanently in the summer it will be huge.
