Fabrizio Romano: Newcastle United closing in on James Trafford deal - New signing imminent
Newcastle United's year-long pursuit of England goalkeeper James Trafford is nearing its conclusion, with Fabrizio Romano now reporting that the two clubs are working out the final details of the deal.
Eddie Howe wanted James Trafford at the Toon 12 months ago, and a £20 million deal was almost done before it collapsed at the 11th hour.
Trafford was keen on the move at the time and took it badly when the rug was pulled, but 12 months on and everything looks to be falling into place for the deal to go through.
In truth, things probably worked out better this way, given the remarkable season Trafford had in the Championship, helping Burnley make it back to the Premier League by keeping 29 clean sheets. After a shaky campaign during Burnley's relegation season, his confidence will be sky high now coming to Tyneside.
Could James Trafford be Paul Mitchell's parting gift?
Fabrizio Romano posted an update on the deal this morning on X, suggesting that it won't be much longer before an official announcement is made. Perhaps this could be Paul Mitchell's parting gift with the sporting director set to leave his post today.
"🚨⚪️⚫️ Newcastle are closing in on James Trafford deal, final details being sorted!
"Agreement almost done with Burnley and then it will be here we go.
"Newcastle are planning to get the deal done very soon."
Newcastle may just be waiting for the final approval from Chelsea
As with all Newcastle United transfers, this one is still subject to approval from Chelsea and if they decide they fancy Trafford, we will have to step aside, but it is looking like we're going to be allowed this one signing.
It's going to be interesting to see how Eddie Howe plays this next season with Nick Pope and James Trafford competing for the No. 1 spot.
We expect he may go with a league 'keeper and a cup 'keeper to keep both players happy - unless, of course, one is in far better form than the other, then there can be no complaints by the player who is struggling.
