A few days ago Newcastle United were credited with an interest in a Brazilian midfielder with a really poor Premier League spell on his CV.

Arthur Melo, known simply as Arthur, had a brief spell on loan at Liverpool from Juventus under Jurgen Klopp, but injuries meant that Arthur has just 12 minutes of Premier League football on his resume after the Reds unsurprisingly didn't take up their option to buy.

Since that disaster, Arthur has had a much more impressive spell on loan at Fiorentina where the defensive midfielder made 33 appearances.

It seems that he also managed to turn a couple of heads with his performances too with Everton and Newcastle reportedly keen on the 27-year-old.

One thing Arthur picked up at Liverpool was "Calm down, calm down"

The Arthur rumour isn't going anywhere

When the story broke we thought it was just another dart in a list of names type of story that pops up, but Spanish outlet Marca are sticking with it and are adamant that Newcastle have made an enquiry for Arthur.

They also go on to say that Arthur would love another crack at the Premier League after his Liverpool disaster, but would also happily remain in Italy where Napoli and Roma hold an interest.

Whatever happens, it's believed Arthur wants it to happen quickly, with the report saying Arthur ‘doesn’t want to wait’ and that he wants to sort out his future ‘as soon as possible’.

We are so firmly on the fence we're getting splinters

Newcastle have long been said to be in the market for a defensive midfielder, so in that regard, there could be some truth to this story, and many players have had disastrous spells at certain clubs and bounced back, so while it's easy to write this off as a bad move, we shouldn't be too quick to judge.

Still, we have a feeling this will be a tough sell for Newcastle to the fans.

We are definitely intrigued by this one, although not necessarily in a positive way. Honestly, we can't decide. I mean, he's a Brazilian international with 22 caps, and he's played for Barcelona and Juventus, he's got to have something about him, right? Otherwise, why would Roma and Napoli be interested? Hmmm!
